What to Do When Your Ex Won't Leave You Alone - Milwaukee Divorce Lawyer

By Carlos Gamino

Divorce cases can get ugly – and even worse, they can result in stalking or harassment. What should you do if your ex won’t leave you alone during or after your divorce?

Stalking and Other Issues During Divorce

While it’s unfortunate, it happens: harassment is too common when marital relationships begin to break down. Sometimes it’s the estranged spouse him- or herself; other times, it’s the former in-laws or friends of the estranged spouse.

Sometimes domestic abuse becomes an issue, as well.

Some of the more common issues revolving around harassment during a divorce include:

  • Repeated telephone calls, whether or not the victim answers
  • Stalking
  • Unplanned visits
  • Repeated emails, even after you’ve asked your ex to stop sending them
  • Social media contact
  • Threats of harm
  • Causing a scene in public, including at your workplace

Harassment is generally any repeated, unwanted or intrusive act, including words, that are intended to disrupt your life.

What to Do if Your Ex Won’t Leave You Alone During Divorce

Your safety is paramount, so if you’re in an unsafe situation, the first thing you should always do is call the police.

If you cannot get your ex to leave you alone, tell your Milwaukee divorce attorney. He or she will be able to help you come up with legal solutions that can put a stop to the harassment, which may include applying for a restraining order.

Wisconsin statutes prohibit someone from:

  • Harassing
  • Intimidating
  • Physically abusing
  • Imposing any restraint on the personal liberty of the other party (or the minor child of either party)

These acts, particularly if you have already warned your ex not to do these things, could be considered harassment under Wisconsin law. The best thing you can do is let your attorney know so he or she can help protect you.
