What is a Green Card Through Registry?
Under U.S. immigration law, some people can get a green card through registry. It’s only available to people who have been present in the United States since on or before January 1, 1972.
Who’s Eligible for Green Card Through Registry?
Only certain people are eligible for green card through registry. It’s important to note that you may be eligible to apply for a green card through registry even if you are currently in the U.S. unlawfully – but you absolutely should consult with an attorney before you apply. In order to qualify, you must meet these conditions:
- You must have entered the United States before January 1, 1972
- You must have resided in the United States continuously since your arrival before January 1, 1972
- You must be a person of good moral character
- You must not be ineligible for naturalization
- You must not be deportable under Section 237(a)(4)(B) of the Immigration and Nationality Act
How Can You Apply for a Green Card Through Registry?
You need to file a certain form to register for a green card. You’ll have to include supporting documentation, too, including:
- Two recent, passport-style photos
- A copy of a government-issued photo ID
- A copy of your birth certificate
- A copy of a passport page with your admission stamp (if you have one)
- Form I-94 – Arrival/Departure record (if you have one)
- Evidence that shows you entered the U.S. before January 1, 1972
- Evidence that shows you have had continuous residence here since your entry
