As Wisconsin immigration attorneys, we understand the challenges that immigrants face on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, the legal immigration process can be time-consuming, confusing, and extremely difficult to navigate. If you’re trying to become an American citizen, here’s what you need to know to make it easier on yourself and on your loved ones.
There is No Such Thing as a “Bad” Question
If you have a question, ask your immigration lawyer. That’s what he or she is here for! The only “bad” questions are the ones that don’t get asked. We know that immigration is confusing, especially because laws are subject to change, funding for staffing at immigration offices can vary (and end up resulting in long wait times) and there is so much involved.
It’s never comfortable to be in the dark about what happens next, so make sure you ask your attorney questions any time they pop up. You’ll be so much more at ease about the process.
Who is Eligible for Citizenship
Not everyone is eligible for U.S. citizenship. Our current laws mandate that:
- You must have 5 years of continuous permanent residency (although waivers are available if you’re here because you married a U.S. citizen or if you’re applying because of domestic violence)
- You must be a person of “good moral character”
- You must have sufficient understanding of U.S. history and principles of government
- You must register with the Selective Service if you are a male under the age of 26
- You must swear to renounce any foreign allegiances you have and to support the U.S. Constitution, as well as take an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S.
There are other requirements, and some of these things can be waived. If you’re not sure whether you’ll qualify for citizenship, your best bet is to talk to one of our Milwaukee immigration lawyers. Our in-depth knowledge of the system and how it all works will help you cut through all of the red tape so you can move forward with your immigration process.
